The "Golden Gathering"

This April will see a milestone event in Morpeth - the 50th Northumbrian Gathering in Morpeth: the “Golden” Gathering will not only revisit some of the themes and activities of earlier years, welcoming back some old friends, but also look to the future with younger performers, street events and workshops to get the general public joining in and specially commissioned music – including a new piece commemorating a jumper worn by David Oliver at one of the very first Gatherings!

Programme for Friday

9.30am - 5pm CRAFTS EXHIBITION with refreshments; adult & junior craft competitions (entries received Thurs. 20th April 5.30pm - 7 pm). Displays/stalls: proggy mats, needlecrafts, jewellery, smallpipes, photos, shepherds’ sticks, CDs, books   Town Hall Corn Exchange 60p/40p

10am– 4pm OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT & STALLS Hautbois (music for St George’s weekend), Punch & Judy, Rent a Peasant, Maximus, Jim Grant’s stories, etc. Market Place  

10am - 4pm NORTHUMBRIAN PIPES: PLAY IN A DAY for adults (over16) with Dave Shaw. Pipes provided. Chantry Bagpipe Museum: please contact Gathering to book placeDaytime ART EXHIBITION Leisure Centre café

10am - 4pm FAMILY ART WORKSHOP - make golden treasure, crowns and Gadgies plus braiding - Market Place Yurt 

10am - 4:30pm ART EXHIBITION plus stalls, activities    Riverside Leisure Centre Café, New Market

10am HISTORIC DANCE WORKSHOP with Elizabeth Lawson   Town Hall; £2/£1 at door

11.15am CLOG DANCE WORKSHOP – North East Hornpipe-style with Sue Jenkinson and Lynette Eldon  Town Hall; £2/£1 at door

12noon - 2pm YOUNG MUSICIANS'  SESSION - drop-in taster to try out the Northumbrian pipes, also general music session  with Tom Fairfax and Paul Knox Bin 21 upper lounge, Bridge St 

12:45pm MAYPOLE WORKSHOP with Elizabeth Lawson   Town Hall; £2/£1 at door

2.00 OFFICIAL OPENING of Gathering by the Mayor of Morpeth in the Town Hall

2:15pm BRETON DANCE WORKSHOP with Suzanne McGregor    Town Hall; £2/£1 at door

3:30pm – 4:30pm FAMILY SONGS, FAMILY TUNES Jim Eldon presents family fiddle tunes of the Pennock family of Goathland, plus Lynette Eldon with a clog step or two. Venue Town Hall £2/£1 at door.

4:30pm NORTHUMBRIAN PIPERS: THE REAL FACTS Richard Heard and friends reveal new research on early pipers in multi-media presentation   Chantry Bagpipe Museum, Bridge St  £3 adult on the door, children free 

4.30 BEDTIME TALES with Taffy Thomas in the Library, Royal Sovereign House, Manchester St   Free - bring a teddy bear!

6.00 STORY SESSION for all ages with Sedayne in the Ice Bar, Newgate St      Free

7.30 GOLDEN GALA CONCERT - including Bottle Bank Band, Bob Bolam, Tom Patterson & Dave Morton, Tyneside Fiddle Alliance, Pauline Page, David & Joey Oliver. MC Alex Swailes - the Morpeth Gadgy  Methodist Church  £10 adult/ £9 unwaged/ £5 school age

8.00   MUSICIANS’ SESSION with Keith Besford, Alasdair Turnbull & friends   Tap & Spile   Donations
